Poem 125- Searching

Poem 125- Searching

Success has many friends,
But here in Benue,
Recklessness has taken over.
Chaos now rules the day
Succour has travelled to a foreign land
Condolences pour in like torrential rain
As we bury our kind everyday.

What have we done wrong?
Are these the gains of democracy?

Security of lives is just a statement
For freedom is very expensive.
We live as lackeys in our ancestral homes
Forbidden to be free
With a curse upon us as we struggle.
They pay lip service to us
Causing people to die & not animals.

What have we done wrong?
Are these the gains of democracy?

There’s no love for my people
As nobody faced the music to reason.
They threaten the peace of my people everyday.
The sun bears witnesses to all this
As we keep searching for peace.
We’re peace loving people
Who stretched forth a brotherly hand,
But our friendship is our undoing.

What have we done wrong?
Are these the gains of democracy?

Keeping silent in the face of evil
Speaks about the support of evil.
Praising service Chiefs in the midst of chaos
Suggests affiliations to happenings across the country.
A father to one is a father to all
Segregation and nepotism are malignant to progress.
Breaking bridges & burning brotherhood is unfair.
We’re dying everyday
& we’re searching for help

What have we done wrong?
Are these the gains of democracy?
